Former Prime Minister Basdeo Panday offered his version of a revised constitution for Trinidad and Tobago as he addressed thousands of UNC Alliance supporters in Marabella Friday night.
Basdeo Panday. Proposed constitution should have president elected by the people, unicameral assembly elected by propotional representation.
Panday's suggestion for a new constitution would include an Executive President elected by universal franchise and a cabinet appointed from among the "best in the country".
He said that would guarantee that the person who runs the nation is acceptable to the majority of the electorate.
Panday also say his proposal would be to eliminate the appointed Senate in preference for a larger, more reperesenative assembly of the people. And he said election for members of that assembly will be based on proportinal represenation to allow a more varied representation of the people's views.
The comments come as a new public opinion poll is suggesting that the UNC Alliance is leading in the PNM in three critical marginal constituencies and is 19 points ahead in the St Augustine constituency, which is currently held b y WInston Dookeran, the leader of the Congress of the People (COP).
The NACTA poll says the UNC-A has a small lead on the PNM in Lopinot BonAir, one of the new constituencies, Mayaro and Chaguanes East.
NACTA's poll is based on random interviews of 780 likely voters and covered the period up to Nove. 1 |
