Sacked UNC Chief Whip, Ramesh Maharaj and controversial Chaguanas West, Member of Parliament, Jack Warner, stormed out on Opposition leader, Basdeo Panday and members of the party’s executive parliamentary caucus and national executive on Wednesday.

The meeting was arranged to resolve the dispute and differences which Maharaj and Warner share with the hierarchy of the United National Congress. It is understood that both Maharaj and Warner arrived at the Rienzi Complex at about 1 pm and left around 2:30 pm. A source close to the meeting said that Warner did not like the manner in which Panday behaved, as sometimes he was insulting. Warner told the media afterwards:“If Panday is the chairman and he could insult my presentation that way, then I am wasting my time and if that’s the case, I would leave and so I walked out.” Maharaj in the meantime, in expressing solidarity with Warner’s position also walked out on the caucus. Panday said that a recommendation was made for a retreat for frank discussions to be held on April 26th in Chaguanas, with an aim to start the healing process. Among those invited to the retreat were members of the executive and the caucus. He added that everyone who attended the meeting agreed to the decision made except Mayaro Member of Parliament Winston Peters, who felt it was his duty to criticize party members openly. Panday also added that he did not insult Warner, but that Warner launched an attack on Oropouche East Member of Parliament, Roodal Moonilal. He is calling on members to resolve their own problems. |
